Android Gingerbread x86 part 2

The folks at Android-x86 Project have updated their codebase and ethernet support has been added to the gingerbread-x86 branch. I made a new build the other night and it's working great! I'm also really excited that the keyboard is in English now. That was a surprise because I didn't see any documentation mentioning a change.

Android Gingerbread x86

I've become more and more interested in Android lately, specifically Android x86. Today I built my own Gingerbread x86 using Android-x86 Project's instructions and with a little help from a friend who's Linux knowledge greatly exceeds my own. In order to build Android for x86 you need to compile the Android source code from android-x86.org's git repositories. Since Gingerbread x86 can only be compiled on a 64 bit build environment I used my Ubuntu Studio x64 (10.04) install on my AMD Opteron 165 desktop. I'm going to detail the steps I had to take to complete this process to help anyone out there who may have had the same problems as I did.
After Initializing a build environment, I went ahead and moved on to obtain the source code. I made my working directory, android-x86, in my home folder. I also had to download repo using
git://android.git.kernel.org/tools/repo.git
and copy the contents of the newly downloaded repo folder to my android-x86 folder. Then I had to change the word python in line 23 of the repo file to python2.6 (this was necessary because for some reason the Python 2.7 was causing errors when I tried to run repo). So now I had my /home/android-x86 with the repo files inside and the modified repo file to point to Python 2.6. In terminal, I cd'd to android-x86 and typed the following:
./repo init -u git://android-x86.git.sf.net/gitroot/android-x86/manifest.git -b gingerbread-x86
After receiving the manifest I had to enter a username and my email address, and whether I wanted to have colored text (never saw any colored text even though I said yes). Once repo was initialized I ran
./repo sync
If you havent noticed by now I had to use slightly different commands than the ones given on the website. I let repo do its thing and when it completed, I had to do the repo init command again using git://git.android-x86.org/manifest.git instead of git://android-x86.git.sf.net/gitroot/android-x86/manifest.git because apparently the sourceforge link missed a few things it needed to download. Once my build tree was complete I had a ~3.1GB android-x86 folder and I was almost ready to build my ISO. I had run into an error while building the ISO and after some googling I found a forum post with a command that fixed my problem with lstdc++:
sudo ln -s /usr/lib32/libstdc++.so.6 /usr/lib32/libstdc++.so
So now I could start building my ISO! I ran the command
make -j2 iso_img TARGET_PRODUCT=generic_x86
The whole building process took a while but when it finished I ended up with a 174.9MB ISO

IMO This thing is better than Google Maps

A friend of mine showed me this site today called Google Maps: From 0 to Instant (v0.2) and I have to say I am impressed! I'm on a WiMax connection that's ~1mbit download on a good day (normally half that though), and this page zips in and out in any mode like I'm on NCIS or something. I hope it's not some sorta ripoff malware site or something, but I doubt it.

Feel free to leave comments please!

Break it Down - The Doctor feat. Ebony Eyez & Trina is my newest track. It took me about two days to get it exactly how I wanted it. I'm quite pleased with it although it could be longer, but whatever. Appearances by NI B4II, NI Pro-53, and Arturia Minimoog on this track.

I Poke Her Poker Face (The_Doctor Remix) - Kid Cudi vs Lady Gaga was fun to make, but it's really just a simple mash up. My favorite part is the 'bluffin with my muffin' part lol!

All Your Base are Doe Boy Fresh - The_Doctor (Three 6 Mafia vs The Gabber Robots) Not much to say about this one really; a few of my friends tell me that they can stand listening to this song longer than some of the others ...

Conversation with George James - The_Doctor. I actually called this guy from Louisiana thinking he was 'bjx0' from BetasIRC. The beat is a sample from Sinnerman by Nina Simone.

Du Hast (The Doctor Remix) - Rammstein. This is an oldie I did in High School when I was first getting into audio production.

Feel Like I Just Got Home - The Doctor presents Swizz Beatz feat. Madonna and 50cent is one of my all time favorites. "I meant to say sugar! Sugar!!" The beat is a variation on The Way I Are by Timbaland.

Gin And Juice (Chopped & Screwed by The_Doctor) - Snoop Doggy Dogg is another oldie. It's a simple track, I was trying to emulate the version I heard on a DJ Screw Mixtape.

Heut Ist Mein Gangsta - Bun B & Sean Kingston vs Blumchen (The Doctor Remix) is a stunning example of what a Club & Hip Hop mash up should sound like!

I'm Cleo (Who's Calling) - The Doctor is what you get when you mix Benny Benasi and an ebaumsworld sound board!

Something in 7/8 - The Doctor is an original composition performed by me on my Roland VR-760. And yes, that is 7/8 time.

Locate and Destroy - The Doctor is another original composition performed by me on my Roland VR-760 and NI's FM7.

Mr. Jones Suck My Dick - The_Doctor (Mike Jones vs The Dickheadz)
I made this track one morning at my friends house when I had my workstation and projector set up there for a party the night before.

Perculator 2005 (The Doctor Mix) - Cajmere is one of my first remixes ever. I first heard the Percolator at a high school dance and it didn't take long for me to change it from a b-more club track to a hard hitting dancefloor anthem!

Sandstorm vs Kernkraft 400 vs Confusion (The Doctor Mix) is a megamix track I made for my friend Grimmest back in high school.

Snap Yo Fingers vs You - The_Doctor (Lil Jon vs Lloyd) is a pretty cool mash up I made when I was listing to a lot of rap music. I use the whistle sound from Peculator in this one.

Speaker on Blap (Popcorn Remix) - The_Doctor (Balance Big Rich & Lil Wayne) is probably my favorite remix so far, I really believe this one could be a monster hit in the club or on the radio!

Stay High (The Doctor Remix) - Three 6 Mafia is still kind of a work in progress for me because I never found an acapella for Stay Fly. I was actually trying to get someone to rap on this but I've never found anyone that's been able too lol

the Awesomeness - The_Doctor is the first track I ever made! Mainly based on Fried Neckbones and Some Home Fries by Willie Bobo and Knuck If You Buck by Crime Mob, this has a ton of samples in it.

This My One (The Doctor's Agostino Remix) - E40, Too Short, and Bun B. I remember uploading this track before, and complaining about Bun B's part; if I could find a more suitable vocal line or something I think I could really improve this track.

Transit (Strawberry Mix) - The_Doctor is another original composition I did on the VR-760. I used Fruity Loops for the drum track (as if you couldn't tell). I had to revamp this a year or two ago and I'm pleased with how it came out for now, but as with all my music it's still a work in process.

4 cadillac rims - $200 you have it for sale?

I put my friends caddy rims on craigslist a few weeks ago for 200$ and check out these emails I got from one of those scammers (I did not correct his spelling, grammar, or punctuation):

1st email:
"4 cadillac rims - $200 you have it for sale?"

lol

2nd email:
"Hi,
Thanks for the response.I am willing to pay your asking price.I will pay by money order as its the only way i can pay you at the moment due to the fact that i am away for an assignment.I will make arrangement for the pick-up after payment have been received by you. I dont mind adding an extra $20 just for you can keep it in my favor.Reply with your full name and address where payment should be sent.and phone number that i can reach you with .Please take the posting off craigslist today and consider it sold to me.
Expecting to hear from you soon.
Regards"

Now, I was starting to get suspicious but I figured I had nothing to lose so I gave him my first and last name and my friends mailing address. He says he will be paying by money order so yea, I'll be waiting to see if this guy is going to mail me a money order for $200 (and I might get an extra $20 added lol).

3rd email:
"Hi,
Pls this to let you know that i have given my client the go ahead to mail payment to you.You should
receive payment within the coming week( 3-4 days time).Pls notify me once payment is
received so that we can proceed with the pickup. Thanks for your understanding and
patience.
Regards"

OK so his client (...?) is going to mail me the payment. Whatever.

4th email:
"Hi ,
I hope you are fine and alright.Have you received the payment? I have been busy
myself but doing great. There is something i think i must bring to your notice. After
a reconciliation of my account , i discovered that somehow my client must have
paid you morethan. And for that reason my pay check has been shorten, however i want to believe i
wont have an issue with you.

Please if you receive the payment, i would like you to deduct your money and send
the remaining via western union to the representative of the moving company that will be
coming for the pickup. I will provide the info you need to complete the western union
transfer.
Thanks once again for your understanding and patience.
Warm regards
Peter."

I just love "Warm regards", it makes me feel comfortable and reassured LoL! So obviously by now you should notice the scam, and if you don't then get off the internet because it's no place for you. At this point it's 10 days since the first email from my buddy Peter and I have yet to receive this money order. I forgot to mention this dude's name is Peter Homer. Yup. This guy must have been watching Simpsons and Family Guy reruns when he cooked up this scheme. Oh yea and what's he mean his "pay check has been shorten" lol?

So another week passes and I do indeed receive my "payment" from Peter! I got a check (personal check typed up with "Certified Check" written in the Memo spot lol) from MAXIMLASER.COM in Carrollton, TX for $1,800!! My friend brought the check (yes check not money order like Peter told me) over and we examined it for a little while before taking it to the bank. The envelope's return address was in Georgia, the check was from a company in Texas, and it was for $1,600 extra which Peter wanted me to Western Union him back! Needless to say I, unsuccessfully, tried to cash it at two local banks and a convenient store; nothing wrong with trying to get some money. By now we were pretty disappointed in Peters check making skills, it looked real enough for us why wouldn't anyone cash it?! So I emailed Peter and asked him what the deal was and here's how it went down:

My email to Peter:
"Good to hear from you Peter! I have received a check from MAXIMLASER.COM. The address is in Carrollton, TX 75006. Is this your check? Please email me back with the amount it is written out for and we can continue our transaction.
Stephen"

His response:
"Hi,

Thanks for keeping me inform about this, and sorry for that mix-up, and any inconviences it might cause you. i gave your information to the account officer to get it sent because as at that time i was yet to be paid. so it was sent out of my weekly paycheck. so when i was to be paid i was short of $1600. From my calculation what was sent, I believe was $1800. it was sent from our Texas office.

Please go ahead and deposit it at your bank and deduct your payment ($200) for the item plus the ($20) for keeping it to my favour and have the difference of the money ($1580) sent via western union to the rep. of the moving company. Here is the information.

Receiver's Name: Chris Micheal
Address: 231 Scott street
Conyers , GA 30012.
Pls you will have to take cash to any western union location around where you stay and have it sent. Deduct the western union charges from the money you are sending to the movers.Get back to me with the following info on the western union receipt..so that i forward it to them.

MTCN
Exact amount sent after deducting charges,
Senders name and address.

Pls once they confirm the receipt of the payment they will proceed with the pick up
Thanks for your kind gesture.
Peter."

So uh, yea ... I'm definitely not doing all that crap.

If you're reading this Mr. Peter Homer: I still have that check, but I don't plan on doing anything with it but maybe roll a bigass J so your money is safe. LoL

R.I.P. Mininova

In early 2005 mininova filled the void left by suprnova.org, with millions of releases just waiting for your uTorrent. Today mininova has announced they will comply with the ruling of the Court of Utrecht, and limit their activities to user content distribution. That means no copyright infringement. Cool.
